It was about seven in the morning one day in 1995. Bhagavan was seated in the breakfast hut at the Ashram with some devotees who were invited to participate at breakfast.

Earlier when Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar had arrived in the car to the hut three identical striped grey cats eagerly run towards the car, miawing all the times, and they preceded Bhagavan into the hut. After Bhagavan had seated himself he directed that the cats be given something to eat and so some idlies and milk were served to them on a plate from which all three ate eagerly. Bhagavan watched them keenly while they ate and his eyes followed them as the cats looked round as though to say thanks and then ran out of the hut.

Bhagavan asked that a few pages of the book "Ramdas on Himself" by Swami Ramdas be read. After the reading session one of the devotees turned to Bhagavan and asked in all earnestness, "Swamiji, what is the purpose of life?"

Bhagavan immediately said, "To remember God."

The devotee now went on a different track. He asked, "Can common people attain the same divinity as you, Swamiji?"

A big smile lit up Bhagavan's face as he put down his cigarette and said, "This beggar has not attained divinity... eh? But common people can attain divinity if they thing of God, all the time... But they are engaged in eatning their livelihood... so they can remember God as often as they can... Then they can get peace of mind."

- Devotee : But how can we remember all the time?

- Bhagavan : Perhaps you can't remember all the time but try to remember the name... It can be Shiva, Rama... whatever it is. You remember God as far as possible.

- Devotee : The scriptures say that when we seek God a Guru will come. Can we take you as our Guru?

- Bhagavan : Yeah... (drawing on his cigarette) If you have faith you can take this beggar as Guru.

- Another devotee : Swamiji, this is about sharing of river waters. Andhra Pradesh says there is surplus in Godavari and Orissa says there is surplus in Mahanadhi. It should be possible to obtain these surplus water for Tamil Nadu. We seek Swamiji's blessings for the fruition of this sharing.

- Bhagavan : Yeah. What happened to Cauvery?

- Devotee : They (Karnataka Government) don't want to follow the Tribunal's award.

- Bhagavan : They are afraid of that Kannadiga party... what is it called? Kannadiga Chaluvaka. So Karnataka Government cannot follow the Tribunals order. In Bihar, the Jharkand movement is for retaining Bihar's minerals for themselves and in Assam the AGP did not wxant oil to be taken... If they go on like this, what will be the state of unity (of India)? (Pause).

You know, Shri Aurobindo had a grand vision of the movement of people - all the pople - towards unity, everywhere. All the people of the world are expected to move together and India is to take the lead in spiritual upliftment... Ramakrishna Paramahamsa said people should aim for spiritual upliftment.

- Devotee : Should we seek initiation?

- Bhagavan : This beggar doesn't initiate anyody... if you want you can get initiated.

- Devotee : What is involved in remembering God?

- Bhagavan : Remember the name as often as possible. My master Swami Ramdas said it is important to remember the name all 24 hours.

- Devotee : Is remembering God different from remembering the name?

- Bhagavan : Remembering the name is the same as remembering God. God is not different from His name.

- Devotee : Can Swamiji tell us about Kundalini?

- Bhagavan (with a wave of His hands) : This beggar does't know anything. Swami Ramdas initiated him in the Ram Mantra to remember as often as possible and this beggar became aware of the Name. That is all this beggar knows.

(There was silence for a little while as Bhagavan completed His cigarette and then appeared to withdraw completely into Himself. Then he said:)

- Bhagavan : This beggar doesn't exist. Everything is Brahman... Brahman is everywhere. That is Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Where is Yogi Ramsuratkumar?

- Devotee : Everywhere.

- Bhagavan (smiling in approval) : That is remembering Yogi Ramsuratkumar.

(Bhagavan lighted a fresh cigarette and pulled at it. There was no smoke.)

If you accept the eixstence of anything else, then you are not remembering Yogi Ramsuratkumar... It is a practice of remembering again and again. No other thought.

You people must have heard this beggar say that he died a the lotus feet of Swami Ramdas in 1952. After that, it is only God everywhere, Father.

Ramdas called Him Ram, this beggar calls Him Father. That is all. In Madalasa's story it is Brahman. This Brahman is everywhere. (To the devotees:) Eh? Do you remember the story of Madalasa? (pause).

Madalasa faulted the name "Vikrant" Brahman is everywhere and 'Vikrant' means going from place to place. There is no coming and or going for Brahman. Brahman the Atman has no form and so she (Maladasa) faulted the name of "Subahu" because Subahu means a person with strong shoulders. (Pause as He looks at the devotees and smokes). Brahman alone exists, therefore there can be no enemies; so she found fault with the name "Shatru Mardana".

There is only one Atman! You are God, All powerful Atman... You must understand that all has come from Brahman and so all is Brahman. Whatever you see has come from Brahman... and exists only in Brahman.

In the commentaries, they give the example of the spider. It starts spinning, and when it does not feel like extending, the spider draws it back. Parabrahman has manifested itself - All is God.

- Devotee : How can we remember this?

- Bhagavan : It is a question of practice... You see inMadalasa's story she was teaching them (her children) to rememvber continuously... It is to be constantly remembered...

You know what Swami Vivekananda says? He says it is a sin to be weak. Vivekananda says it is a sin. You must be strong. How can one become strong? You must remember that you are the Atman, nothing but Paramatman. This body is weak and subject to decay and death... But you must remember that you are not the body. You are not the body but the Atman. You must always remember. You must practice all the time like Madalasa tells her children.

Bhagavan finished his cigarette and inddcated that breakfast be served. He directed the chanting of "Arunachala Shiva" while breakfast was being served and after everyone was served, the chanting concluded and breakfast commenced.

After the breakfast there was chanting ogf Ram Nam for a while. Bhagavan also made some individual inquiries of the devotees and wound up the session.

There was such a feeling of exhilaration. Bhagavan stayed focused on the main question "What is the purpose of life", though devotees had strayed from the topic.

Let us pray to Bhagavan to stay focused on Him every living minute.

Il était environ sept heures dumatin un jour de 1995. Bhagavan était assis dans la hutte du petit déjeuner à l'Ashram avec quelques fidèles qui avaient été invités à participer au petit déjeuner.

Plus tôt, lorsque Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar était arrivé à la hutte dans la voiture, trois chats gris rayés coururent vers la voiture avec empressement en miaulant tout le temps, et ils précédèrent Bhagavan dans la hutte. Après que Bhagavan se soit lui-même assis, il demanda qsue l'on donne quelque chose à manger aux chats et des idlis et du lait leur furent donc servis sur une assiette dans laquelles ils mangèrent avidement. Alors qu'ils mangeaient, Bhagavan les regardait intensément et ses yeux les vuivirent alors que les chats tournaient leur regard comme pour dire merci puis coururent hors de la hutte.

Bhagavan demanda que quelques pages du livre de Swami Ramdas "Ramdas sur Lui-même" soient lues. Après la séance de lecture un des fidèles se tourna vers Bhagavan et lui demanda avec sérieux : "Bhagavan, quel est le but de la vie ?"

Bhagavan répondit immédiatement, "Se souvenir de Dieu.'

Le fidèle continua sur une autre piste. Il demanda : "Les gens ordinaires peuvent-ils atteindre la même divinité que vous, Swzamiji ?"

Un grand sourire éclaira le visage de Nhagavan tandis qu'il posait sa cigarette et il dit : "Ce mendiant n'a pas atteint la divinité... hé ? Mais les gens ordinaires peuvent atteindre la divinitén s'ils pensent toutle temps à Dieu... Mazis ils sont occupés à gagner leur vie... alors ils peuvent se souvenir de Dieu aussi souvent qu'ils le peuvent ... Alors ils pourront obtenir la paix du mental."

- Fidèle : Mais comment pouvons-nous sous souvenir tout le temps ?

- Bhagavan : Peut-être ne pouvez-vous pas vous souvenir tout le temps,mais essayez de vous souvenir du nom ... Ca peut être Shiva, Rama... n'importe lequel. Rappelez-vous de Dieu autant que cela est possible.

- Fidèle : Les Ecritures disent qsue lorsque nous recherchons Dieu un Guru arrive. Pouvons-nous vous prendre pour notre Guru ?

- Bhagavan : Oui ... (tirant sur sa cigarette) Si vous avez foi, vous pouvez prendre ce mendiant pour Guru.

- Un autre fidèle : Swamiji, c'est au sujet du partage des eaux des fleuves. L'Andhra Pradesh dit qu'il y a un surplus avec lza Fodavari et l'Orissa dit qu'il y a un surplus avec la Mahanadhi. Il devrait être possible d'obtenir ces surplus pour le Tamil Nadu. Nous recherchons les bénédictions de Swamiji pour la réalisation de ce partage.

- Bhagavan : Oui. Qu'est-il arrivé à la Kauveri ?

- Fidèle : Ils (le Gouvernement du Karnataka) ne veulent pas suivre lza décision du Tribunal.

- Bhagavan : Ils ont peur de ce parti Kannadiga ... comment s'appelle-t-il? Kannadiga Chaluvaka. Aussi le Gouvernement du Karnataka ne peut pas suivre l'ordre du Tribunal. Au Bihar, le mouvement du Jharkand veut garder les minéraux du Bihar pour eux-mêmes et en Assam l'AGP ne veut pas que l'on prenne l'huile. S'ils continuent comme cela, quelle sera l'état de l'unité (de l'Inde) ? (Pause).

Vous savez, Shri Aurobindo avait une grande vision du mouvement des gens - de tout le monde - vers l'unité, partout. On s'attend à ce que tous les peuples du monde se mettent ensemble et l'Inde prendra la direction de l'enrichissement spirituel... Ramakrishna Paramahamsa a dit que les gens devaient viser l'enrichissement spirituel.

- Fidèle : Devons-nous rechercher l'initiation ?

- Bhagavan : Ce mendiant n'initie personne... Si vous voulez, vous pouvez vous faire initier.

- Fidèle : Qu'est-ce que cela entraîne, se souvenir de Dieu ?

- Bhagavan : Se rappeler le nom aussi souvent que possible. Mon maître Swami Ramdas disait qu'ilest important de se souvenir du nom 24 heures sur 24.

- Fidèle : Y a-t-il une différence entre se rappeler de Dieu et se rappeler du nom ?

- Bhagavan : Se rappeler du nom est la même chose que se rappeler de Dieu. Dieu n'est pas différent de Sonnom.

- Fidèle : Swamiji peut-il nous parler de la Kundalini ?

- Bhagavan (d'un geste de la main) : Ce mendiant ne sait rien. Swami Ramdas l'a initié dans le Ram Namtra pour se souvenir aussi souvent que possible et ce mendiant est devenu conscient du Nom. C'est tout ce que ce mendiant sait.

(Il y eut un silence pendant un petit moment alors que Bhagavan finissait sa cigarette, puis il parut se retirer complètement en Lui-même. Puis il dit:

- Bhagavan : Ce mendiant n'existe pas. Tout est Brahman... Brahman est partout. Cela est Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Où est Yogi Ramsuratkumar ?

- Fidèle : Partout.

- Bhagavan (souriant en approbation) : Cela, c'est se rappeler Yogi Ramsuratkumar.

(Bhagavan alluma une nouvelle cigarette et tira dessus. Iln'y eut pas de fumée)

Si vous accepter l'existence de n'impoerte quoi d'autre, alors vous ne vous rappelez pas Yogi Ramsuratkumar. C'est une pratique qsui consiste à se souvenir encore et encore. Pas d'autre pensée.

Vous devez avoir entendu ce mendiant dire qu'il était mort aux pieds de lutus de Swami Ramdas en 1952. Après çà, il n'y a que Dieu partout, Père.

Ramdas L'appelait Ram, ce mendiant L'appelle Père. C'est tout. Dans l'histoire de Madalasa Il est Brahman. Ce Brahman est partout. (Aux fidèles :) Hé, vous souvenez-vous de l'histoire de Madalasa ? (Pause).

Mazladasaz trtouva un défaut dans le nom "Vikrant." Brahman est partout et 'Vikrant' veut dire 'qui va de place en place'. Il n'y a pas d'aller et venue pour Brahman. Brahman l'Atman n'a pas de forme et donc elle (Madalasa) a trouvé un défaut dans le nom de "Subahu" parce que Subahu veut dire 'une personne qui a de fortes épaules'. (Pause alors qu'Il regarde les fidèles et fume). Seul Brahman existe, il n'y a donc pas d'ennemis; aussi trouva-t-elle un défaut dans le nom "Shatru Mardana".

Il n'y a qu'un seul Atman ! Vous êtes Dieu, l'Atman Tout-puissant... Vous devez comprendre que tout est venu de Brahman et donc que tout est Brahman. Tout ce que vous voyez est venu de Brahman... et n'existe qu'en Brahman.

Dans les commentaires, on donne l'expemple de l'araignée. Elle commence à filer, et quand elle n'a pas envie de s'étendre, l'araignée le retire. Pazrabrahman s'est manifesté - Tout est Dieu.

- Fidèle : Comment pouvons-nous nous souvenir de cela ?

- Bhagavan : C'est une question de pratique... Vous voyez, dans l'histoire de Madalasa, elle leur enseigne (à ses enfants) à swe souvenir continuellement. On doit s'en souvenir constamment.

Vous savez ce que dit Swami Vivekananda? Il dit que c'est un péché qsue d'être faible. Vivekananda dit que c'est un péché. Vous devez être forts. Comment peut-on devenirt fort?. Vous devez vous rappeler que vous êtes l'Atman, rien d'autre que le Paramatman. Ce corps est faible et il est sujet à la décrépitude et à la mort... Mais vous devez vous rappeler que vous n'êtes pas le corps. Vous n'êtes pas le corps pais l'Atman. Vous devez tounjours vous en rappeler. Vous devez opratiquer tout le temps, comme Madalasa l'a dit à ses enfants.

Bhagavan termina sa cigarette et indiqsua que l'on serve le petit déjeuner. Il demanda de chanter "Arunachala Shiva" pendant que l'on servait le petit déjeuner et, après que tout le monde fût servi, le chant s'arrêta et le petit déjeuner commença.

Après le breakfast, le Ramnam fut chanté pendant quelque temps. Bhagavan posa aussi quelques questions individuelles et mit fin à la session.

Il y avait une telle gaieté de coeur ! Bhagavan était resté concentré sur la question principale : "Quel est le but de la vie", bien que les fidèles s'étaient égarés en denors du sujet.

Prions Bhagavan de rester concentré sur Lui à chaque minute de la vie.
