Deux lunes dans le ciel

 Two moons in the sky

Smt. Jayalakshmi Appan

"Ah bon?

Mon fils fut surpris !

I take it as Bhagavan's Grace that I should be asked to write an article in the souvenir which will be a collection of the divine experiences that devotees have had with Bhagavan. Bhagavan's Grace will swiftly flow to those who do not live for themselves but for the sake of the welfare of the world. Bhagavan's Lila on 07/12/1994 is illustrative of this fact.

Bhagavan pulled out Rs 1300/= from all three pockets of His jibba on last Tamil new year's day (14/04/1994) and instructed that both breakfast and lunch be served as Prasad at the ashram to all devotees. Since this amount was sufficient, He also directed that devotees who wish to offer Annadhânam may contribute Rs 1300/= for a day's food expenses.

My husband's birthday was on the seventh of December and therefore we had sent Rs 1300/= by money order to the ashram for the food expenses of devotees and bhiksha for Bhagavan and had gone to Tiruvannamalai on 07/12/1994.

Bhagavan had come to the darshan at 6 AM itself to inspect the work of construction at the ashram. We went to the ashram at about 8 AM. We saw Bhagavan on his way back to Sudama and we saluted him. Bhagavan blessed us both happily. He returned to the ashram at exactly 10 AM. A number of devotees had assembled there. There were devotees from the USA, both men and women. I was sitting in the front row, in the group meant for women. Bhagavan blessed all those present with his eyes, got up from His seat and went around the devotees thrice and then went back to His seat.

Bhagavan spoke something to Devaki Ma, who got up, came and sat next to me. Mataji said that Bhagavan had asked her to find out from me what the problem was and then tell Him. Without mentioning any personal problems, I talked about the problems of devotees and requested that Bhagavan should solve them. I did not mention any personal problems. Ma Devaki said, "Bhagavan told me "this Amma will mention only the problems of others and not her own; find out from her what her problems are." You have done exactly that. Please tell me only your problems." Even then, only common problems were coming up.

"There has been no rain at all for the past four years in our area. There is a shortage of drinking water. When we asked last year what could be cultivated in this arid area, Bhagavan advised us to cultivate sugar cane. We have cultivated sugar cane in two and half acres. There is no water in the wells and no rains. There is a lot of suffering", I said.

"I have severe pain in the legs and find it impossible to walk. We are living in a tiny village with no medical aid; it is problematic. May Bhagavan bless my heirs for their well-being", I said. Mataji went and informed Bhagavan accordingly.

The personification of compassion got down from the dais and came and sat next to me. In his uniquely accessible fashion he raised his hands, moved his fingers, glanced at me with his luminous eyes and blessed me for half and hour. Having been facing the dais, now I attempted to shift in order to sit facing Him, but He signalled me to continue to sit facing the stage. When he got uyp, he again went arount the devotees thrice, blessed us all and then resumed his seat on the dais.

He left for Sudama at noon and returned to the ashram punctually at 4 PM. Meanwhile, we had lunch at the ashram, went to the library and requested for a copy of the book "Deivakuzhandaiyin Thiruvilayâdlagal" and started reading the book until Swami returned.

After He entered the ashram we went for his darshan just as we had done in the morning. In the afternoon, Bhagavan sat next to my husband and blessed him also. On the previous occasions, when we had been fortunate enough to have his darshan at Sudama, he had removed a garland from His neck and given it to Ma Devaki and then had it placed on my neck. This evening he had me garlanded with the garland on Mataji's neck and joked that I should remove the garland only after I reached my home at Acham Tavirthan! I said, "Only your feet, the ashram, is any home and village" and removed the garland at the ashram. I have preserved it as a holy treasure in my puja room.

Once, we had darshan of Swami Ji at Sannadhi stret house with my daughter, son-in-laxw, grandson Balaji, and granddaughter Vijayalakshmi. Balaji was studying in the fifth standard ar the Padma Seshadri School. My son-in-law was worried that Balaji was not getting first rank. He prayed to Bhagavan that Balaji was not getting any good rank and that he should study well. Balaji was doing Japa "Ramji, Ramji" internally.

"Ranganathan, Balaji is doing some japa", Bhagavan said.

"No, Swami Ji, he is keeping quiet", my son-in-law said.

Bhagavan asked Balaji, "Come on Balaji, what are you saying?" Balaji informed Bhagavan that he had been chanting "Ramji,Ramji" silently ever since he entered the Sannadhi street abode. Bhagavan called Balaji to his side, patted him, and asked, "Who taught you to do the japa 'Ramji, Ramji?'

Balaji said, "My grand father told me and I have done accordingly."

"Is it? What can Ramji give you?" Bhagavan asked.

Balaji said, "First rank."

Bhagavan said : "What is there in the rank? You will shine well in your studies." Bhagavan blessed him and said, "There is some jasmine in this hall. You search for it and bring it to me."

Balaji searched and reported that he could not find it. There was a large book which Bhagavan directed Balaji to bring. Balaji carried it to Him with difficulty. A ball of strung jasmine was inside that book. Bhagavan took it, inhaled it and gave it to Balaji instructing him to preserve it well and blessed him. Since my son-in-law's job involves frequant transfers, he has handed it over to us for safe keeping.

Balaji completed his ICWA exam and CA intermediate exam even while he was doing his B. Com course and was writing his CA final in 1996. (This article was written in 1995). He is getting trained under a reputed chartered accountant at Chennai who respects his abilities.

When the Ramayana and Mahabharata were being telecast on TV he would recollect all the episodes saying that he well remembered his grandfather's stories. My granddaughter, Vijayalakshmi, is single minded. She has intalled "Jaya guru" in her heart ever since anyone can remember. She is of the firm opinion that He alone is sufficient for her. All of us would be constantly chanting "Jaya Guru Om Ramsuratkumar, Guru Maharaja Shri Ramsurat kumar." Vijayalakshmi, even as a three-year-old, would be constantly chanting "Jaya Guru, Jaya Guru."

I must mention two incidents illustrative of her firm devotion...

Whe had attended the wedding of a relative at Madurai, where Vijayalakshmi had accompanied us. One of her earrings was lost in the wedding hall. We had planned to have darshan of Bhagavan after the wedding. Vijayalakshmi said that she would get back the lost earring by Bhagavan's grace and if she got them back she would offer Rs 50/= at Bhagavan's holy feet. We returned to our village after the wedding. Some relatives who came to the village after a few days said that they had found the missing earring and handed it back to us.

We went to Tiruvannamalai, found that Bhagavan wazs at the Annamalaiyar Temple and went there. Bhagavan was at the Sannadhi of Chendura Vinayakar. We prostrated to Him. A very large crowd gathered in a short while. When the crowd became unmanageable, Bhagavan directed that the offerings be gathered and put in the hundi, and the flowers, fruits, biscuits and other eatables be first offered to Shri Vinayaka and then the prasad was to be distributed amongst the crowd. We obeyed Swamiji. However, Vijayalakshmi refused to put the Rs 50/= in the hundi and said that this was a matter between her and Swamiji and we could do what we liked.

She stood in a place where she could be seen by Swami Ji and started her japa "Jaya Guru". After half an hour Bhagavan said, "Vijayalakshmi! Come here!" Having called her He asked her to give Him the Rs 50/= and put it in his pocket.

The next time we we,nt to Sannadhi street house we could not speak to Swami Ji. After darshan I came out. Vijayalakshmi could not accept this disappointment. "There are so many things to be discussed. Jaya Guru has not heard anything or given his blessings. He has been quite indifferent. I am going to stand in the middle of the road, under the hot sun, without any footwear until he calls me", she declared and stood in the middle of the road without causing any disturbance to the people standing in line for darshan of Bhagavan. However, she stood in place which could be seen by Bhagavan and started doing Nama Japa. She stood there from 10:30 AM till noon. When the assistant who was helping people get in requested her to leave, she said that she was not disturbing anyone and if Bhagavan asked her to leave she would go. Bhagavan decided not to test this child with such a pure resolve and called her in. Se dried her tears and prostrated happily before Bhagavan.

"Vijayalakshmi, now tell me," Bhagavan said to her. She said that her father had assumed a very responsible post in a new bank and that Bhagavan should bless him with sufficient skill to efficiently manage it; her grandparents were alone in the village and Bhagavan should help them. She and Balaji were staying alone in the hostel and Bhagavan should help them.

"Vijayalakshmi, grandfather, grandmother, mother, father, Balaji, you, all of you will be well! My Fathers's blessings" said Bhagavan emphatically and with a laugh He gave her a large bunch of bananas, a large ball of jasmine and blessed her.

At this time Shri and Shrimati M. M. P. Chandrasekaran were sitting in Swami Ji's presence and were watching everything. When SwamiJi retired after 12 o'clock, he (Shri Chandrasekaran) came to us and said, "Sir, we though you were firm in your devotion, but your daughter has surpassed you!" He expressed his pleasant surprise. They gave us Bhagavan's Prasad of milk payasam and curd vadai and requested us to have lunch with them.

We belong to an ordinary middle-class family and we cannot give property to our heirs. However, we could show them divine grace and a saint who is an incarnation of God. This is really hard to get. A mother would not show any partiality between her children.

My son was obliged to live for a year separated from his wife. However, we advised him that he should stop living with us and set up a home separately with his wife. He was at Chennai and we were at Srirangam. My daughter-in-law's mother and a few of her relatives came and troubled us demanding that the couple be divorced. We pacified them saying that it is a great sin to separate a married couple and that a divorce would be cruel. We also advised our son to live with them in Chennai. We sent our son to have darshan of Bhagavan, seeking his blessings. The compassionate Mahatma took out Rs 100/= from his pocket and asked my son (Srinivasan) to buy two copies of the Ramayana. Srinivasan returned saying that only one copy was available and submitted that book and the change at Bhagavan's feet. Bhagavan wrote with His holy Hand, "My Father's blessings to Sita Srinivasan for a happy and harmonious life!" Then He said, "Srinivasan, turn some pages in the book." When Srinivasan opened the book and turned the pages randomly, the chapter starting "Sundara kândam" appeared. He read the entire chapter in Bhagavan presence. When the part relating to Hanuman dealing with the rakshasas came, Bhagavan said, "stop it." Bhagavan directed that the book be read seven times over. When this was done, my daughter and son-in-law made efforts and re-united Sita and Srinivasan. The couple are united till today. Following Bhagavan's advice we are in the small village, in His protection, immersed in His dhyana.

SHOWING TWO MOONS

No one knows Bhagavan completely. When we minutely examine each event He is seen as the cause for all, appearing in an ordinary human form. He is the absolute, liberating those already on the path, joining them even more securely with the spiritual force. At the moment he is wielding a rope, "I have tied my devotees with the rope of love and compassion." He seems to be saying.

It seems to demonstrate that they will secure both spiritual and material benefits. This is the four ornament, in addition to the double Palmyra fan, the small stick and the coconut shell. All the sages are the manifestation of the One Absolute Brahman. Only the way they talk and the way they move withj people may differ.

Swami Gnanananda (of Tapovanam)did not reveal himself for a long time. The fortunate few, because of the merits from their past life, were able to have his darshan and receive his blessings. Once, he tied his big toes with a cloth. The devotees were unhappy thinking that he had hurt his toes and made inquiries. Swami Gnanananda said, "I have tied my devotees to my feet!"

When Shri Vaishnavaites die, they annonce that the person has reached the holy feet of the Acharya. This is what has been conveyed by Swami Gnanananda through this small gesture. Similarly, our Bhagavan is walking around wearing a rope around his neck as an ornament - this is only His Lila.

When my husband wxas employed with the Railways he had the opportunity to travel freely, but in all the 27 years of employment he had visited only Tapovanam and Tiruvannamalai. So when he retired in 1986, on the strong persuasion of our daughter at Delhi, we travelled to Rishikesh, Haridvar, Mathura, Brindavan etc. and took thea waters of the Ganges back home and performed Abhishekam of Srinivasa Perumal at our village. We wished to carry the water to Bhagavan at Tiruvannamalai also but the circumstances did not allow this at the time. We could think of a delightful alternative, however. We remembered how our good friend Shri Perumalappam at Srivilliputthur, who had the sacred sandals of Bhagavan given to him; we had the firm faith that the Ganges water Abhishekam, on the full moon (Purnima) day, to the holy sandals will be equivalent to presenting the water to Bhagavan himself. So, we left for Srirangam and Shri Perumalappan was also kind enough to do the Abhishekam.

The next day our son came to Srirangam asking us why we did not visit him even though we had come to Chennai. We pacified him and sent him back, requesting him to take a bottle of Ganga water to Bhagavan at Tiruvannamalai on the way. Upon reaching Tiruvannamalai, my son did not find Bhagavan at Sannadhi street house. So, he went to the temple and had His darshan at the Shivagangai Tirtham. Bhagavan called him and asked him what was it that he was carrying. When he said that his fathe had asked him to submit the Ganga water to him, Bhagavan said, "Your father has already given Ganga watr to me. Take it to Tapovanam and ask the Shastri to perform Abhishek to Lord Gnanananda Mahalingam."

My son was surprised! How could his father have given Bhagavan the water? His father had not informed him of this. In a shock, he wrote a letter to his father informing him of the mysterious message from Bhagavan. Meanwhile, Bhagavan had him seated next to himself. There were about 10 people near Bhagavan. Then, Bhagavan pointed to the sky and asked, "What do you see?" Everyone was surprised. They replied, "Bhagavan, we are seeing two moons!"

"You are able to see and this beggar is able to see, but will astronomers accept this? There are seven moons, suns, earth, etc. This is sufficient for now." And He gave leave to all the friends.

We have this unmistakable faith that the Almighty God is playing His Lila in the form of this beggar. He has indicated that he is present everywhere by ackowledging the Abhisheka. Goddess Abhirami had manifested the moon on a new moon day. By showing two moons in the sky Bhagavan has shown that he is the Almighty. The devotees who are close to Bhagavan would know that he is all knowing. The force or energy which is all-powerful, everywhere and all-knowing is the great person Perumal. (Perum-great, Al-person). May Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar - that Perumal - protect everyone.
