Première rencontre du
Dr Kanagavel avec Bhagavan

Dr. Kanagavel first
meeting with Bhagavan

Prof. P.V. Karunakaran, Salem

(Saranagatam, novembre 2019)

Preparation for meeting the Guru appears to begin long before the actual event, in the case of some devotees. Often, their skepticism, especially being averse to worshipping a human being as God, delays the meeting. Man is by and large a rational being. It may take time for him to realize that reason is not a totally dependable tool of perception. As he spiritually progresses, he learns to rely more and more on intuition, his faith becomes deeper, he gets more and more exposed to Guru's grace and begins to feel that Guru is much more than a human being. The providential first meeting touches off his subtle spiritual transformation. Now he begins to rue his initial reluctance and misgivings.

Dr Kanagavel Rajan was a Professor of Zoology who retired as the Principal of a college in Aruppukottai. He believed in God but not in god men, whereas his elder sister Rajeshwari treated her Guru, Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar, as God. Her deep devotion to the great Master has made her leave her hearth and home and live in Bhagavan's Ashram, ever since it became functional. She is still there, in the service of her Guru, about eighteen years after His Mahasamadhi. Before joining the Ashram, she used to visit Yogiji frequently. On many occasions, after returning from such visits she would advise her brother to pay a visit to the Guru. But Kanagavel Rajan used to make fun of her for being so gullible as to worship bogus, self-styled gurus. Unlike him his wife Lalitha was gradually developing faith, as she listened to Rajeswari's narration of her fascinating experiences with Bhagavan.

In the year 1984 the Professor was faced with some problems in the family, and at the college where he was working. As one who had amply benefited by His Grace, Rajeshwari again persuaded her brother to meet Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar for relief. But Kanagavel pooh-poohed the idea affirmed that he had Lord Muruga of Tiruchendur to help him and that was enough. As usual he scoffed at his sister for worshipping dubious holy men.

Months passed. In1985 Dr. Rajan's nephew (another sister's son) happened to visit him and his family. He was working in Sivakasi for the Agsar Company of Rajamanicka Nadar, a well-known devotee of Bhagavan Yogi Ramsuratkumar. In the course of family chit-chat, he mentioned that Sri Rajamaicka Nadar and his wife Damayanthi Ammal used to say that it was highly beneficial to have Yogi Ramsuratkumar's picture at home. In this context he went on to suggest to his uncle that he also could have in his house a picture of Yogi Ramsuratkumar and benefit by it. As was expected, Dr.Kanagavel retorted that no other picture was needed at his house, as Lord Muruga's was already there. However, as the nephew was leaving, the Professor told him to ask Damayanthi Ammal for a picture of the swami, as though he was mysteriously prompted by someone from within. The nephew rejoined that if the old lady were to oblige him, she would insist on himself going and receiving it, in person. Then Dr. Rajan dismissed the discussion, saying rather listlessly that he could just make a try, and if the swami was to come to his house, he certainly would.

A few days later the nephew made another visit, this time with a surprise for them. He was carrying a picture of Yogi Ramsuratkumar! Handing it to his uncle, he said he wondered how Damayanthi Ammal changed her mind and sent the picture by him. It appears when he conveyed his uncle's wish for the picture Damayanthi Ammal asked whether his uncle would treat it with due respect and devotion. He replied that his uncle had no faith in Yogiji but was an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga. Yet, much to his surprise, as he was leaving for Aruppukottai, Damayanthi Ammal entered her pooja room and came out with the picture of Yogi Ramsuratkumar, saying that it was for his uncle. The change of attitude found in Damayanthi Ammal was as much a miracle as the way in which Dr. Kanagavel Rajan changed his mind and asked for the picture.

Dr. Rajan asked his nephew to get the picture framed and hang it in the hall of his house. It was done on the day of Pongal in 1986. Dr. Kanagavel Rajan's mysterious transformation had just begun. In February, that is, about a month later, he was attending the wedding of a niece of his.
As the wedding ceremony was going on inside the local Siva temple, he was watching the whole proceedings standing near the idol of Nandi. Suddenly something from within prompted him to call his wife, Lalitha, from the crowd. Lalitha could not believe it when her skeptical husband suggested that both of them could visit her Guru, Yogi Ramsuratkumar the next day. Her joy knew no bounds. Excited, she ran to her sister-in-law, Rajeshwari, and disclosed her husband's unexpected decision. Both of them immediately managed to get two bus tickets for Tiruvannamalai. The hurry in which they acted surprised, and even slightly annoyed, Dr. Rajan.

It was 4.15 in the following morning when Kanagavel Rajan and his wife got off the bus at Car Street stop in Tiruvannamalai. As Grace would have it, it happened to be their wedding anniversary. In his eagerness to see the swami Dr Rajan could not wait till day-break. On enquiry he found out the dwelling place of Swami and gently knocked at the door three times as was instructed by Rajeshwari. He tried again, but there was no response. So he felt that Lalitha could try next, as she had faith in the swami. Hardly had she knocked at the outer door, than the inner wooden door of
Yogiji's house opened. A stocky figure with a glowing, bearded face emerged. His face had the lurid colour of a rose in full bloom and it appeared to have a halo at the back. Dr. Rajan's rationality took a back seat for a while, at the sight of this strange person with a glow about him. Swami came forward to the outer grill door and asked them who they were, where they had come from and what they wanted. Dazed, Dr Rajan mumbled the answer to these questions. When he said they were there for His Darshan, Swami said that was not the time for Darshan and granted them
appointment at 7 am. As Swami was going in, Dr Rajan felt disappointed that in the dim light they could not even see Swami's face clearly or get blessed by him. As if Swami could sense their thoughts, when he reached the wooden door he turned back and blessed them raising both his hands. This gesture of Bhagavan not only made Dr. Rajan happy but also gave a flip to his growing faith.

They went to a lodging house and had a brief rest. After their bath and quick breakfast they went back to Swami's abode at 7 arn. By then some devotees were already seated in the holy presence of
Swami and basking in His Grace. The Pr'ofessor and his wife were asked to join them and sit down facing the Swami. Then Bhagavan asked them who they were, why they wanted to see Him and so on. After reverentially answering these questions, Dr. Kanakavel and his wife sat there just enjoying how Yogiji dealt with the other devotees. Among other things, what they noted was the conversation between one lady devotee and Bhagavan. The devotee said her daughter's wedding was to take place between May and June that year and that it was bound up with the redemption of some document from a Bank. Bhagavan told her emphatically that she would get it back before the wedding. Little did Dr. Rajan realize then that Yogiji's affirmation had relevance to the document he himself had pledged at a bank. At 10.30 Swami blessed them with Prasadam and permitted the Professor and his wife to leave. During the three and a half blissful hours they had spent with Bhagavan, they thought nothing significant had happened. When they returned home, Rajeswari was eagerly waiting to hear from them the details of their pilgrimage to her Guru. In the course of
their narration they mentioned how Bhagavan had assured the lady devotee that she would be surely able to redeem her document from the bank before her daughter's marriage. Immediately Rajeswari butted in to point out that Swami's assurance was meant for Dr. Kanakavel as well. Then only the Professor realized that Bhagavan was not simply making them sit idle in His presence, but solving their problem unasked! At that juncture, Rajeswari happened to come out with a piece of advice helpful not only to her brother, but to all Guru-worshippers. That is, when we are in the presence of an enlightened guru, we must keenly observe every word and gesture of His: there may be some hidden message for us. Rajeswari was right, for Kanakavel's document was released by his bank during the same time as was stipulated in the assurance Swami had given to the lady devotee with regard to her document.

The glowing face of the swami is still fresh in the mind of Dr Kanagavel Rajan. It was a divine vision Yogiji had granted him, which reappears in his mind whenever he sits down for prayer or meditation. The first meeting marked a turning point in the spiritual evolution of the Professor. At the end of a subsequent visit, Swami blessed him with a picture of Himself (kolakkarai picture) and asked him to read the name printed at the bottom of it. Adding the honorific, 'Sri', he read it as Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Swami disapproved it and corrected it as simply Yogi Ramsuratkumar and asked him to repeat it several times. Dr Kanagavel Rajan regards this momentous gesture of the great guru as nothing short of Mantra Deeksha. To him, the picture given by Bhagavan is a slice of Guru's Grace that continuously wafts protective vibrations from his prayer room, and the holy name his lifeline.
